If you thought checks were something only your grandparents would wear, its time to reconsider your pattern game. Much like spring florals, winter plaid is equally groundbreaking. And while the pattern may be timeless, checks are this season’s trendy key player.
There’s a vintage elegance to checks that’s both contemporary and traditional. Although winter tends to be more serious than summer’s playfulness, checks have found new life in all their many forms, colours and unexpected pairings. Fall 2018 Menswear checks were showcased by Francesco Russo, who stood out with super-oversized checks on equivalently oversized overcoats. Donatella Versace’s 90-inspired feel came to life with bright checked jackets were paired with tartan pants and plaid shirts. Marni, Gucci, and Wooyoungmi’s approach were examples of why checks have stood the test of time and are always in favour.
But let’s be honest; check clashing isn’t the easiest to pull off. Because of the statement they make, most people tend to shy away from this pattern especially if it’s a double or triple checked look. The simplest way to get around the statement making trend is to pair it with a more neutral basic like a plain shirt, crew neck, roll necks to help make the look more subtle.
Without a doubt, a checked suit is a great addition to every man’s closet. Small or wide, soft grey to brown, what’s your plaid of choice?
